Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is conjuring its first spirit — well, sort of.
Lance Barber, who for seven seasons starred as Cooper family patriarch George Sr. on CBS‘ Young Sheldon, will reprise his role on the Thursday, Feb. 27 episode of the recently renewed spinoff.
Barber’s beloved character was famously killed off in Young Sheldon’s third-to-last episode. As foretold on The Big Bang Theory, George Sr. suffered a fatal heart attack, and his funeral factored heavily into the prequel’s May 2024 series finale. So how, exactly, will George Sr. appear on Georgie & Mandy?
“His dad visits him in a dream,” series co-creator Steve Holland explained during a recent press day on set of the CBS sitcom. “George is thinking about his dad, and he’s worried that his dad might be disappointed in him…. [The idea] came out of a conversation we’d had with Chuck [Lorre], even early on, talking about the show. Chuck had said about his own father that he still dreams about him, he still visits him, so that was a thing we had thought about. And then when we were breaking this episode, it just seemed like a great opportunity to bring George back.”
Holland previously told TVLine that Georgie & Mandy would never erase the events of Young Sheldon, or bring George Sr. back from the dead. “If we found the right sort of emotional reason for Georgie [to see him], and it didn’t just feel like a stunt — like, here’s George Sr. crawling his way out of the grave — and we treated it respectfully, it would be great to have Lance back on,” he said in November. And now they will.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage has already brought back several Young Sheldon characters. In addition to series regulars Montana Jordan (Georgie), Emily Osment (Mandy), Rachel Bay Jones (Audrey) and Will Sasso (Jim), Zoe Perry (Mary), Raegan Revord (Missy), Matt Hobby (Pastor Jeff), Craig T. Nelson (Dale) and Annie Potts (Meemaw) have all made guest appearances.
New episodes of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage air Thursdays at 8/7c on CBS (and stream next day on Paramount+). Revisit our May 2024 interview about George Sr.’s death with Lance Barber and Zoe Perry below, then hit the comments and let us know if you’re looking forward to Barber’s return.
I miss the show
This is great, he’s such a great character, and if there is a way to involve him in the show, its awesome. And just because he’s gone doesn’t mean that he isn’t still a big part of their lives, so I really like this idea.
An unconventional crossover idea: Have Lance reprise his George Cooper role as a free range ghost visiting Woodstone Manor on Ghosts. Both Young Sheldon and Georgie/Mandy have led into it.
Ghosts take place in 2025 and G&MFM takes place 30 years ago. So technically your idea would be a sequel.
The show is amazing and Montana Jordan is outstanding week to week look forward to this episode
I’m so glad this show exists. I never watched the Big Bang theory but somehow started watching young Sheldon with my kids, and I loved it so much more than I’d expected! We just wrapped our binge – George’s death WRECKED me – I didn’t know it was coming!!! 🥺. It was so emotional watching those kids grow up, and as an 80’s/90’s kid it was super nostalgic. I’m excited to watch Georgie and Mandy – these characters feel like old friends now. They kill of MeeMaw and I riot!!! Protect Annie Potts at all costs!!!
They can’t. She was alive (albeit a different actress) in The Big Bang Theory.
Meemaw was still alive in The Big Bang Theory, so you don’t have to worry.
Agreed, Montana Jordan is doing a great job on the show and as a lead actor! I am really enjoying this show! I am looking forward to Lance Barber reprising his role in a dream format, he is also an amazing actor, I miss his character.
Definitely looking forward to that! Loved his character. Also, in the episodes where George died and the aftermath, I was a sobbing wreck through most of it! I thought it was all handled so beautifully. I do miss the show, but am definitely loving Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
In dream sequences yes! it’s a good idea, he’s such a great actor anyways I love his facial expressions and everything! good actor ♥️♥️♥️🎈
Hey TVLine, your contact form on your contact us page isn’t loading – all it’s doing is showing a long line of HTML gibberish (I tried two different browsers). I went there to submit a question asking if you know why the actor playing Sassapis was missing again on tonight’s episode of Ghosts but the form wouldn’t load for me. Might want to take a look and see if something is wrong there.
Peculiar!
InsideLine@tvline.com for such questions (though, not every ghost is necessarily in every episode).
I get that but trust me when I say that there’s something fishy going on this season. I don’t mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist but go back and watch it from start to the latest episode and Roman (who plays Sas) has been the only ghost who’s been missing from at least two episodes so far, possibly more, I can’t recall. At this point I’m wondering if there’s something going on behind the scenes like a Suzanne Sommers-type situation – okay, I know that’s a bit much but really it’s getting oddly suspicious how many times he’s been gone. And it’s always him, not any of the other regular ghosts. I don’t suppose you could interview the showrunners and ask what’s up? And by the way, I’m not the only fan who’s noticed it, I know there were a few others who noticed it too in previous discussions.
(Sorry to bring it here by the way, there’s no article discussing this week’s Ghosts episode).
I look forward to that episode. George Sr. was my favorite character in that show. It makes sense that he could come back (in a dream), as Georgie no doubt misses his dad.
SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for ruining the surprise!
The creators released the information and TVline reported on it…if you care that much, maybe don’t go on entertainment websites that report news.
It’s literally in the preview for the next episode. If you watched it live, you saw it in the preview. If you don’t want even the amount of spoilers from a preview, then you should probably not be on a TV news site.
I was a BBT fan, and watched the first few seasons of Young Sheldon. I liked the show but life got in the way and was no longer watching till the last season.
Started watching Georgie and Mandy and LOVE it!!!! Looking forward to this. For some reason a few episodes back when Georgie took his sister to the cemetery to see their dads grave I was kind of expecting to see his ghost in that episode either talking to Georgie or both of them. Go figure, they are bringing him back in another way. Can’t wait!!!
I loved Young Sheldon and all the characters in the drama so I would like to see this new idea and hope that it is just as entertaining.
The writers will give it a good chance of being good, so Good Luck
Excited to see him again.
I wanted to like G&MFM so much. But, honestly after watching all of the episodes, I just don’t see the point of the show. It is nowhere as good as Young Sheldon. CBS let a great show go for a “just o.k.” show.
I agree, I was excited to watch it, I wanted to like it and I gave it a good shot(twice actually) but it just never clicked with me sadly. To me, the tone is just not a sitcom style show, it would have worked better for me if they had kept it the same format as Young Sheldon.
I can’t watch George Sr’s death show because I cry every single time I watch it! I miss seeing him as he was my favorite on YS. Can’t wait to see him again ♥️
Anything chuck Lorre puts his name to is always pure gold, funny and so entertaining. However, wish Georgie’s dad would somehow realistically be back but not as dream. If there was a way, Mr. Lorre could figure it out. A dream is just sad to me as it would be depressing to say goodbye at end of each dream.
If this is the only way to get Lance Barber and Montana back in a story line that is not an actual flashback from the Young Sheldon show, I’ll take it. Even though it’s a dream I think it’s wonderful to have “George” Lance Barber back. I am hoping they will (TPTB) bring him on like they did in Big Bang Theory with the great Bob Newhart but more often!
What about Sheldon? He could at least have a phone call.
I didn’t watched george and mandy first marriage. Felt on just to be on. Like young sheldon season 5 episode 2-season 7 episode 12. The season 4 final showed that the show was out of ideas. But cause a heath sceard on the dad to trick people into seeing the season 5 premier. Than pointless. In all honesty. They could had made season 5 3 episode by doing a time skip. And playing the last two episodes of season 7. Be a season 5 episode 2and 3 tv movie. The rest was just filler anyway
